I recently had the head gasket replaced in my 1996 olds cutlass 3.1L coupe.
Since then it will occasionally redline after just simple driving and I am finding that if I open the air blead valve that is above the waterpump this will cool the engine below redline and then after a bit it will go back to more normal tempatures.
I have been suggested that there is an airlock in my system and that is causing the overheating.
it has also been suggested that the thermostat is sticking causing it.
And finally it was suggested that the headgasket didn’t seal and that is injecting air into the system… which would be another very expensive repair job…
which of these is most likely and what routes should I go about fixing the problem without just taking it to a shop and hoping for the best?
Replacing a head gasket is always a prime opening for ccontinuing car problems. It’s been said that the pressure is never the same, which I believe is the ‘airlock’ problem. It could be the thermostat or the water pump itself. The best thing to do is get it back to the mechanic, but make sure (and don’t take offense at this) you take a guy with you who knows something about cars. The mechanic will be less likely to give you a bunch of crap that you don’t understand.

I got this white lt120 lawnmower with a 2 cylinder opposed twin 12.5hp briggs and stratton engine. The first time i started it i had to have the choke all the way open for it to stay running, even after it was warmed up. so i cleaned the carburetor, the jet was clogged and i removed the gunk from the jet and i cleaned the rest of the carburetor. so i started it up an now it will keep reving up and down by its self and if i pull the choke out half way it will stop this. so i dont know what the problem is. thank you.
Its called Hunting and Surging. It has one of 2 causes. 1.) Air filter is clogged 2.) fuel supply restriction. The engine trys to go higher in speed and air or fuel is restricted, to the machine slows down. The resulting slowing increases the supply of air or fuel, causing the machine to speed up. And then it keeps going in a vicious circle, till something changes (throttle, load). Best solution is to clean the carb again, and change the fuel filter if it has one.
