Help replacing crankshaft
I’ve got a bent crankshaft on my B&S push lawn mower engine. I haven’t done any small engine repair since highschool, but I want to replace this myself. I figure even if I completely screw it up, so what, I’ll still need a new mower. My question is, where can I find some good HOW TO on this repair? Everything I find online says take it to a pro. Any help would be much appreciated.
I have done this before for the same reason and I can’t give you a URL but I can say that it isn’t very hard to do. I will say to make sure that you sand both ends of the current crank down to bare shiny metal to remove any rust and dirt as if you try to take apart the engine with the shaft rusty it will score the main bearings. Just take your time and use a good torque wrench along with plenty of assembly lube when you put the rod bearing cap back on as the last thing you want is a dry start or the cap bolts coming loose and scoring the rod bearing journal on the new crank. Since the engine will be removed from the deck and torn down anyway it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to pull the head to clean out any carbon buildup.
