The Alfa Giulietta A Modern Hatch

First impressions are predictably favourable. It’s a great-looking car. The “hidden” rear door handles lend it a sporty look and the new lights are pieces of modern art in their own way. They’re even more impressive in the dark thanks to LEDs: the rear lamps, for instance, have a unique spiral styling you’ll only appreciate in the dark.

Alfa’s designers kept retrospective tendencies at bay when penning the Giulietta’s exterior but allowed themselves a few reminiscences inside. Notably, the silver ball atop the gear stick and a set of toggle switches on the dashboard.

Elsewhere, it’s modern, with plastics covering most of the surfaces. Some switchgear and styling is carried over from the Alfa MiTo but the Giulietta’s cabin is higher quality. There’s plenty of space, too. It’s no coincidence the Alfa falls squarely between the Golf and Focus in overall dimensions.

Five engines will be available, including a pair of 1.4-litre units, a 1.6-litre turbodiesel and a 168bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel. Topping off the range will be the hi-performance Cloverleaf variation, powered by a 1,750 petrol engine producing 232bhp. All of the engines are turbocharged.

Can the same be said of how the Giulietta drives? First impressions suggest soThe Giulietta was comfortable on the motorway and refined, though wind noise was noticeable at higher speeds. The chassis has built in balance and loads of grip in the corners. It’s also stable under heavy braking and change of direction. Under duress, the standard electronic safety systems are deployed rapidly and they keep the car on line.

Getting More From Your Cars Suspension

Improving the suspension on the car can be a noteworthy option. The original car suspension fitted by the car manufacturers usually is a compromise between comfort and handling. If you intend to start using your car for a more sporting nature, then you might have to consider making certain improvements to your suspension. Quite like a person would upgrade their ccm ice skates once they got better. The stock car suspension could actually roll quite a bit, due to the fact that car manufacturers mostly make the springs and dampers quite soft to help soak up bumps and provide a better ride.

To improve the handling of the car, one of the best things to upgrade is the dampers of the car. If your motorcar has done more than 30,000 miles and is fitted with oil dampers, then an upgrade to heavy duty oil in the dampers may help to improve the handling of the car. The one thing that happens with oil filled dampers are that they will incline to fade as the oil gets hot and starts to thin out. One of the solutions is to exchange the dampers with gas filled dampers instead of oil filled dampers to help with the handling.

The hydraulic components are mostly the same as the other dampers apart from the fact that they have small gas chambers that compress the gas to aid with the carrying capacity. You will find that several of the dampers you can purchase also have an adjustable screw so you can adjust the stiffness of the damper should you be using your car for sporting events one day and road use another day. Lots of cars today are actually fitted with gas filled dampers as standard but you will also find that there will be an alternative aftermarket version available. These are generally a bolt on replacement with no other mods needed.

Once the dampers are sorted, the following thing is the springs. There are two angles to approach the spring area. One way to eliminate pitching and rolling is to get rid of the cheap springs and fit stiffer springs to the car. Other ways is to fit lowered and uprated springs which should assist to lower the centre of gravity of the car and make it more stable.

Also looking at the roll bushes and other suspension bushes is worthwhile. By uprating to polyurethane instead of rubber will aid to keep these bushes stiffer and give them less roll. The downside is due to the bushes not absorbing so much, there may be a bit more vibration in the ride.

With all these changes the vehicle should handle a fair bit better in a straight line and around the corners, but remember the ride comfort over rough roads may not be as comfortable as before.

The Impacts of a Car Dent

Modern cars are more susceptible to dings and dents than the cars of just a few decades ago.  As fuel economy and accident safety have become increasingly important, automotive engineers and manufacturers have designed cars as more of a space frame with the external body panels literally stretched over the frame.  These external body panels have been made from progressively thinner materials such that today’s new cars can be dented quite easily.

The external body panels of newer cars are also made of many different materials and are no longer exclusively rendered from simple stamped expanses of rolled sheet steel.  Cars have body panels made from materials such as dent-resistant high-impact plastic, soft aluminum, high-strength fiberglass, high-tech carbon fiber, and softer plastic compounds for bumpers and other susceptible areas.  Each of these materials offers different properties when it comes to fixing a car dent.  Aluminum areas can dent easily, while high-impact plastics, fiberglass and carbon fiber areas may sustain gouges from impacting sharp corners of other vehicles or objects such as parking barriers, fences or children’s toys.

Car dents can often be easily repaired and removed by technicians who have skill and knowledge in this field, depending upon the depth and severity of the dent.  Such repairs will typically prove to be too difficult and technically challenging for the average “do-it-yourself” car owner, but professional technicians are specially trained to perform such repairs.  If the damage is too extensive, the body panel or bumper must be removed and a new panel painted and installed.  However, if the damage is repairable, the technician will use various methods to pull the dent back out of the panel without using any body fillers or repainting methods.  These paintless dent removal methods are often highly effective for removing dents, hail damage, and other types of indentations that can mar the surface of a car, without resorting to the trouble or expense of body work. For those times when fixing a dent does require repainting, paintless dent removal can still be a great way to prepare the car for painting.

18 Inch Wheel Vibration On E34

If you choose to fit wheels of 18 inch and over to the E34 BMW 5 series, some problems can be encountered with some wheels. Fitting after market alloy wheels which you can obtain from several car accessory shops may cause vibration when your car reaches 60 miles per hour. This vibration possibly could occur when the car is under braking, which might make you imagine it is not a wheel balancing problem. Wheel balancing could at first appear to be the trouble as the fault may seem to occur around the 50-60 mph speed mark.

From my own experience, I have had the wheels taken to a garage several times to have them balanced. Only to find that the flaw rarely seems to go away, or seems to be worse a day or so later. The vibration on my auto also happened when the car was under braking. Thus I went along the route of changing the brake discs, thinking maybe they were warped. However after changing the discs and the pads the vibration was still there coming and going some what.

It was said to me that the track control arms are normally the trouble that makes the car pull to the left when braking and no doubt the reason of the vibration. So I decided to change both items. Next thing that was tested was swapping the front wheels with rear wheels and visa versa, and also checking the wheels were not buckled. This didn’t appear to help much.

The aftermarket BMW 5 series estate E39 wheels today are said by the suppliers that they are suited for the E39 as well as the E34 model. Hubs on the E34 models are in point of fact smaller than the E39 models, which means even with plastic shims supplied with the wheels, these are not really suitable for the E34 models. Whilst trying three different styles of 18 inch alloy wheels on my BMW E34 the same quivering occurred on all sets. One set was a MV  type 1 style. Then I went to the TSW Viper style wheels that had the same problem, then I got some replica Ac Schnitzer 18 inch wheels.

When looking through eBay one day I came across some metal shims that were suited for the E34 to fit E39 wheels to it. Once these shims had been fitted the vibration finally disappeared. I have only located these shims for sale on eBay, so they may be worth a look if you are experiencing the same woes.
