The Planning Stages
Just how involved should your planning be? It depends on how well you wish the activities to go! If it is a very necessary occasion, possibly even a conference sponsored by the company, then any unique activities should be well organised or even rehearsed if presentation is required.
Initial planning should go over the imaginative and educational aspects of the team building event. Clear aims should be emphasised and instructions should be clear so that the whole team will understand what is expected of them. Any activities or role playing exercises should be analysed to make sure that they fit the occasion and have practical value. While professionalism can’t be displaced, remember to also make the activities fun. Even a workshop event or a employees discussion should be amusing to the team and feature some colorful and happy commentary.
As a team builder, or what might be called a trainer or boss of a team, you should become an educator to your colleagues and become a source of credibility and authority. An effective team builder uses many different techniques from different professions. In addition to a teacher, a team builder acts as a parent
A psychologist
A trainer
A coach
A guru and even a minister.
That is because effective team building involves more than just arranging a team according to mechanical procedures. It involves persuasion, constructive thinking and even a level of love and spirituality.
What an Outline Looks Like
An outline may or may not be required, depending on how well you know your material and can remember crucial points. You may choose to print out a short outline that highlights the main points you are trying to get across, as well as logistical facts for example challenge instructions, team role assignments and crucial questions to consider in follow up. Outlines generally consist of phrases rather than sentences, since you won’t actually be reading your outline but will be refreshing your memory. (For the sake of this illustration sentences are used) An outline could look something like this:
Part 1. Reaching Your Full Potential
Superhero Activity: (Adapted) Ask employees what their perfect job would be if they continued to develop, regardless of any limitation.
Explain the importance of goal setting and how the company can assist them achieve their dreams.
Group Discussion. Open the floor to questions and answers.
Part 2. The importance of Team Work
Activity: Quiz. Assign colleagues to two different teams and give each team the same riddle. Assign teams in groups of five and watch to find out which colleagues take a step towards leadership.
