A Way To Have Spiritual Discipline In Life

I’m going to share about my New Year’s resolution in 2012. I already experienced great problems in life even though I’m still during my 20s. I recognize how early God let me experience all of these things.

I had been asking myself, “What exactly is God’s reason that He let me feel all of these pain in life?” I’m thinking it’s a bad karma since I have also consider myself to be a sinner. However I thought this can be already too much for me to experience these. Base on my age, I would not be experiencing these complaints.

I’m eager to write my New Year’s resolution for 2012 last December of 2011. But when I read what I wrote, I thought none of them was achievable. I did revise what I have written then. Until I have come up with one New Year’s resolution that was to change myself. However, I’m running out of ideas on how could I do that. I thought this is still not achievable.

After days of realization, I came across a very important thing for me to change myself into a better person; somebody who is stuffed with all good things in life. And this is to have spiritual discipline in life. I do believe that’ll be the beginning of changing myself perfectly into a better person. By this I’m sure I’ve got to handle my problems and would help me heal all the pain inside my heart that will result into living a happy life.

I’m a individual who always pray at night; thanking God, asking forgiveness and asking blessings for my loved ones and also to every one of the people I know.

However, I think praying alone just isn’t enough for me to improve my spiritual discipline in life. My New Year’s resolution includes, to attend church regularly, to attend prayer groups and also to become an active Christian in this place. I do believe these things may become possible to happen. It really came into my mind that I cannot do all of these things with all the temptations all over the place.

I have read an article regarding a well-respected person named Douglas Todd. He is attending retreats and tends to be with silent groups to build up a life and character. In his post, he was telling something about an author named Merton. In his book about New Seeds Of Contemplation, Douglas did emphasize what Merton wrote.

Merton mentioned, “If you have to live in a city and work among machines and ride in the subways and eat in a place where the radio makes you deaf with spurious news and where the food destroys your life and the sentiments of those around you poison your heart with boredom, do not be impatient, but accept it as the love of God and a seed of solitude planted in your soul.”
“Meanwhile,” he wrote, “keep your sense of compassion for the men and women who have forgotten the very concept of solitude. You, at least, know that it exists, and that it is the source of peace and joy. You can still hope for such joy. They do not even hope for it anymore.”

I did reflect about what Merton was telling us. I’m sure this will work and will also get me closer into spiritual disciplines in life.
